Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

If this picturesque corner of the Borders didn’t already have enough to recommend itself, the restaurant at Kailzie Gardens has more than added another attraction. Chef Stuart Clink took on the out-of-town eatery in 2010 and was awarded Michelin Bib Gourmand status in 2012. He brings with him cooking expertise from a range of venues, including kitchens in Edinburgh and Stockholm. The result is a selection of exceptional food which combines the best of many worlds. Everything from croissants to red velvet cake is made on the premises and using local and organic ingredients as a matter of course. Set in a converted 19th-century stables, the dining area has a relaxed old-world charm while the menu is contemporary and innovative. Daily specials cater for more traditional tastes but a pick and mix lunch of smorrebrod (Danish open sandwiches) is a memorable treat. Cured duck breast on rye bread with red cabbage, apple and beetroot is presented with artistic and painstaking attention to detail and is as pleasing on the palate as on the eye. Well-stocked wood-burning stoves in the winter and tables spilling out into the stone courtyard in summer leave no excuse not to enjoy this hidden gem.
