Established in 1875, Glenglassaugh has a history of piecemeal success - closed between 1907 to 1960, it was re-opened only to create a light whisky with limited character to use for blends. When, ten years later, it was discovered that the whisky was too complex for this purpose it was closed again in 1986. It was during this period, however, that the whiskies that would later go on to win awards were produced and laid down. In 2008 a group of investors bought the distillery, and in November the malt mill began once more for the first time in 22 years, with the first casks filled just before Christmas. 2009 saw three whiskies released: a 21-year-old (subsequently replaced by a 26 year old), an “Aged Over 30 Years” and an “Aged Over 40 Years”. Revival, the first whisky to be released post-refurbishment, was launched in June 2012, and the Chosen Few is a series of single cask releases, each bottling chosen by a different member of the distillery team. A number of spirit drinks are also produced, including Sloe Berry liqueur, and spirits made from just malted barley, water and yeast: original Clearac; Blushes, matured in ex-red wine casks; Fledgling XB, matured in first fill ex-bourbon barrels, and Peated.
