After working in the motor trade until the age of 65, William Rollins embarked upon an entirely new post-retirement trade, and now works 14 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year tending his 9000 hens. Half are free range, half live in barns, and he stocks as far afield as Gretna – his boxes have become a familiar sight in delis, farm shops and butchers across Dumfries and Galloway. He also sells duck, quail and goose eggs. As he's happy to tell customers at the Gatehouse of Fleet farmers' market he attends every Saturday morning: 'Everything dies of old age with us'.
