When Reading Lasses café and book shop opened in Wigtown, they asked Suzie Parker if she could start providing them with bread. Little could they, or she, have known that a whole new post-retirement start-up would be sparked. Parker now makes as much organic, artisan bread, cakes, traybakes and biscuits as she feels comfortable with, happy not to take over the world as she runs the company purely for the love of baking. Championing local ingredients and businesses, her quiches and breads are wonderful, and Christmas cakes made with three-month rum and sherry-soaked fruit fly out of her hands. Once a year, during the Savour the Flavours fortnight, she opens her bakery and 'secret garden' up to visitors, who can try their hand at pottery, eat in the pop-up café and buy fair trade gifts. The rest of the year, find her at Gatehouse of Fleet farmers' market every Saturday – but be quick, she sells out fast…
