Vino now have five branches across Edinburgh: those in the Grange and Broughton opened at the same time in June 2010, quickly followed by Comiston in September that year, the Stockbridge branch in June 2011 and their wine bar-come-shop on Market Street in 2016 as part of the New Waverley Arches development. Modern and stylish, with a nicely lit array of spirits, they’re not limited to wine. As is increasingly to be expected in good off-licences, there’s a decent selection of craft beers, the majority Scottish (including Cromarty, Knops, Stewart, Harviestoun and Black Isle), but also English, American and worldwide. Gin is sneaking up on whisky in the popularity stakes, and Vino stock a couple of shelves-worth. Head to Stockbridge for the rare sight of an Enomatic machine – a snazzy dispenser that keeps eight bottles of wine under pressure, meaning it stays fresh for three weeks. More usually seen in restaurants for wines by the glass, here it’s a good chance to try before you buy. There are more tastings most weekends, of varying formality. All five branches also stock Chocolate Tree bars, and Stockbridge and the Grange have freezers of Cook’s handmade ready meals.
