The newest social enterprise from Autism Ventures, The Café on the Corner opened in October 2012. Going some way to counteract the dearth of decent, independent neighbourhood cafés this side of New Town, they're still finding their feet, but the signs are hopeful. Despite a somewhat severe, frill-free exterior, the small room is light and simple, adorned only by artwork from its sister business, The Gallery on the Corner. Food is streamlined, with more in the pipeline than on the plates: panini (extremely reasonably priced), home-baked cakes and soups. More hot food is planned, as is stronger local sourcing, though a good start has been made on this with Artisan Roast coffee, Wee Tea Company loose leaf, and Breadwinner stromboli. When their wifi is organised, this place could well become a welcome retreat for local workers from the George Street chains.
