A shop somewhat in a league of its own in Edinburgh – and indeed Scotland – at present, Cook sell frozen ready-meals in a huge array of varieties. Unlike the packaged meals from supermarkets, however, these are freshly made in Kent, from scratch, using only ingredients you'd find in the average kitchen – no preservatives, funny oils or other dodgy chemicals. Freezers are categorised into how many they'll feed (one, two, four or a family of two adults and two children), or what kind of food they are – British classics, Indian, healthy, puddings, canapés etc. Most are frozen, though a new range in microwaveable pots is aimed mainly at students and office lunches. Pork and chicken are barn rather than free-range, but an effort to use sustainable fish is clear in meals such as tilapia tom yum broth. For a totally effort-free dinner, they have an extensive delivery service across Edinburgh, the Borders and East Lothian.
