Lagavulin has a history going back to 1816, with the opening of the first legal distillery on Islay. The distillery is now owned and operated by the Diageo Group and produces the celebrated single malt, the peatiest and smokiest of them all. The flagship brand is the 16 year old, matured for longer than other single malts, using barley that's been exposed to much more smoke than usual: the result is intense, and prized by whisky fans. 12 year old is a special release with a sweeter overall character, and Distillers Choice has had an extra maturation in sherry casks to make it mellower than the 16 year old.
