The Balvenie Distillery
Balvenie are the last distillery in the Highlands to use a traditional malting floor, on which four malt men work to germinate and dry home-grown barley. They are unusual also in having a resident coppersmith to maintain the stills, and a team of coopers to ensure each barrel is in peak condition - these skills are shared with sister distillery Glenfiddich. Malt Master David Stewart celebrated 50 years in the job in 2012, making him the longest serving master of any distillery. He is responsible for the Balvenie range: 12 and 17 year old DoubleWood; 14 year old Caribbean Cask; 21 year old PortWood; 12 year old Single Barrel First Fill; Single Barrel 15 year old; 30 year old; 50 year old and Tun 1401, made of six of Balvenie's most successful malts married for several months in a traditional tun. Tours can be booked online or by phone, and cost £35 per person.
