On the hillside beside Strontian, the village at the head of Loch Sunart at the gateway to Ardnamurchan, Chris and Chrissie Morgan run a croft that blends self-sufficiency, sustainability, good food and two luxury self-catering houses. Sleeping eight and four respectively (more children can be fitted in, and the two houses have an interlinking door), they're kitted out to VisitScotland's five-star level, including underfloor heating, an Aga and an outdoor hot-tub with glorious views up the glen. The heat and electricity comes from a wind turbine and a solid-fuel burner, while the hosts' enthusiasm for home-cooked and home-raised produce means that you'll find freshly baked scones on arrival, the option of a stew made from the croft's own beef, and opportunities to gather eggs, pick raspberries or gather salad leaves.
