A restaurant with rooms, rather than hotel dining room, Rissons in Strathaven has a mid-priced, crowd-pleasing menu overseen by co-owner and head chef Scott Baxter, who bought the place with his wife Anne in 2002. Dining is the focus of the business, with regular Demo and Dine evenings hosted by Scott. Pasta, bread and tablet are made in-house, and welcome local names like St Brides chicken and Strathaven Ale appear throughout the menus; cheese is from Lymekilns in Glasgow, and some fresh produce comes from their own garden.

There’s something very refreshing about talking to Rissons' co-owners Ann and Scott Baxter about where they get their supplies from. 'Eggs and salads from a farm in Sandford, pigeon from a local man in Lesmahagow, cucumbers from the top of the hill over there,' and so on. It’s the way small out-of-town places should be, and Strathaven is lucky to have it. The menu is ever-changing but there’s always a concise choice of meats, fish and a vegetarian dish given simple, contemporary treatments. Tarts and pastries are properly crisp and buttery, like one with red onion and Lanark cheese. Cuts of beef are slow cooked in Strathaven Ale, tender and comforting; lamb is juicy, just the right side of pink, and served with a barley risotto which adds texture. A midweek ‘small plates’ menu is a delightful way to sample many of the little touches that brighten up the menu, while the sweet-toothed will be happy to see as many dessert options as there are mains: perhaps a rhubarb crumble (made with rhubarb from their own back yard) or a citrus crowdie cake with fresh lemon curd. The portions are as hearty as the food is homely, and its location overlooking the park (ask for a conservatory table if possible) is another great selling point.
