One of Scotland's largest breweries, Belhaven has been owned by the beer giant Greene King since 2005. It's also one of the country's oldest, brewing since 1719 (and perhaps, though undocumented, since the 16th century and earlier), and its flagship beer, Belhaven Best, is amongst the most recognisable pump clips around. When rail links reached Dunbar in 1846, it opened the brewery's wares up to a much wider audience, and a diversification into malting allowed them to weather the storm that closed swathes of smaller breweries. In 1972, the business was sold out of family ownership, and the malting ended. Belhaven Best was launched in 1991, and the rest of the range includes Best Extra Cold, Belhaven Black, 80 Shilling, Belhaven IPA and St Andrews Ale, supplemented by seasonals, and a five-strong stable of bottled beers.
