David and Caroline Lawrie have run the Schoolhouse since 2006, and proudly display their commitment to local sourcing and scratch cooking on a blackboard in the entrance: 'no packet mixes', free-range eggs, organic flour, and everything made on site, including bread. They grow as many of their vegetables and herbs as possible in a garden out the back, even managing to cultivate mini melons. Set just off the A75, the Schoolhouse is an all-rounder venue covering meals from brunch to high tea (two courses for £9.95). There's a deli counter packed with cheese, meat and handmade baking for picnic lunches, and they'll open evenings for pre-booked parties. Coeliacs are well covered with gluten-free cakes and a willingness to adapt meals.
