In 2004, Aaron & Cassie Foord moved into two crofter's cottages on Unst, the most northerly isle of the UK, having had enough of surburban life in West Sussex. One of these cottages became their first chocolate workshop: the initial selections released were fruit and luxury (gluten-free champagne, Cointreau and Tia Maria chocolates). These have now been joined by six other boxes: classic praline, coffee and mint; caramels; mint chocolates; dark chocolate, orange and cherry; crofter’s (filled with whisky, brandy and rum, no wonder they were drawn to the crofting life), and Grandma Pearl’s ginger creams. By 2007, the chocolates and tearoom had become popular enough to warrant relocation to the former RAF camp at Saxa Ford, in which they've set up a chocolate shop and dog-friendly café, as well as an extensive exhibition giving the history of the site. The North Base Visitor Centre has a café, information room, craft room and ‘Walkers are Welcome’ centre, and is open between March and October. In the winter months, or if Unst is a bit out of the way, you can buy Foords chocolates online.
