The peculiarly named Cafelolz@21 has been going for five years on Kirkwall’s Bridge Street and its Facebook page will attest to its popularity. Owner Lorraine Pilkington-Tait (Lol) is a catering veteran with a passion for good produce and a knack for generating custom through social media. Everything is cooked and baked on the premises daily and, paying more than just lip service to local suppliers and producers, the daily special might be Orkney salmon and garden pea risotto, Cullen skink made with locally caught fish, or a cake made using Dark Island, one of Orkney Brewery’s ales. At lunch there’s a daily selection of innovative superfood salads like puy lentil with yuzu and spinach, or watercress, date, orange and radish with orange blossom and fennel dressing. The cafe is open for breakfast, lunch and coffee and cakes and, to top it all, they now have a license to sell alcohol from 11am.
