A find of a café serving excellent lunches, with a range of artisanal chocolates and bars.
Coffee, cakes and chocolate. It’s a pretty winning combination, and one that Johanna and Philip Whitehead have down to a fine art. The coffee is custom-roasted by Dundee’s James Aimer, while the homemade cakes have been known to include sourdough doughnuts filled with key lime curd and homemade blackcurrant and star anise jam. And that’s before you catch sight of Johanna’s award-winning handmade tablet, chocolates and truffles – their take on a Picnic bar, for instance, layers pretzels, peanuts and cranberries in sea salt caramel, adds peanut butter truffle and is hand-dipped in 43% Venezuelan milk chocolate. For something less indulgent, there’s a host of interesting freshly made salad options, slow-proved bread made on-site, as well as daily soups and quiches made using many ingredients sourced from local suppliers, including Bertram’s and Tillygloom Farm. Chocolates are available by mail order as well as from the shop, for anything from a small gift box to corporate and event orders. You will also find 88 Degrees at markets and events now and then: check the Facebook page for details.
