Mrs Bridges is the fictional character from the TV series Upstairs Downstairs, and all sorts of delicious jams and chutneys are being created in her name. There are some imaginative combinations such as beetroot and orange chutney or blueberry curd, and more traditional jams made from berries grown in Angus. The shop, open during the week, is full of rows of enticing preserves and relishes – and good bargains as end-of-line jars of fruit and vegetable goodies are sold at a fraction of their normal price.

With so much soft fruit grown in Angus, it is perhaps ironic that the region, or more accurately Dundee, is synonymous with marmalade made from a citrus fruit that would never grow in chilly Scottish groves.
