Shane Goodbody is mad about fortified wines and a qualified sherry educator, Matthew McFadyen learned the wine ropes at Oddbins, and Mark Connelly is the whisky obsessive. Together, they've just celebrated the first birthday of their spirits, champagne, sometimes beer and generally alcohol-focused shop. Which also sells humidor-stored cigars. And has a 30-seater custom-made tasting room, in which they host regular tastings of everything from champagne to beer, and, of course, myriad spirits. Not content with selling the stuff, the mysteriously named Cask 23 is a continuously topped-up octave cask from which batches of unique blended whisky are sold – see their website for details of what's being added.
It sounds like a dream business for three like-minded friends. Shane Goodbody, Matthew McFadyen and Mark Connelly each have years of experience in the retail and drinks industries. With The Good Spirits Company – housed in what was an iconic record store on Bath Street – they’ve founded a kind of boutique off-licence specialising in rare and interesting spirits. There’s a huge range of single-malt Scotch and artisanal gins, plus curiosities like Indian whisky and Brazilian cachaça. Champagne, fortified wines and beer make appearances too, but the guys have decided to avoid the crowded table-wine market completely. One of the few places in town where you can still buy a decent cigar, the store features a walk-in humidor. An online shop is now fully operational through the website.
