The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

An instant hit with local residents, students and nearby workers when it opened in 2011, this busy and traditional Merchant City shop fries up quality suppers with a determined focus on the healthier aspects of what a fish supper can do for us – or at least a diet with seafood. Their great-value haddock supper, freshly cooked to order, is a major draw, with butterflied fillets coming in a good, crisp batter using a family recipe honed over a century. Other fish, such as pollock, hake and sea bass, coming in daily from Anstruther and Aberdeen, are more standardly priced. Biodegradable boxes, good mushy peas, plenty of choice including fresh pasta dishes and lively, friendly service add to the appeal. Those wanting to cook their own fish can take some home at a 20 per cent discount – or just let the experts do it and grab one of the few window seats to savour.
