A highly professional and popular restaurant specialising in Scottish food, unusually set in a West End sports club

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

A field full of mud-splattered men playing rugby on a floodlit pitch is, to say the least, a novel prelude to a nice meal. Such are the quirks of Café Source Too, which is based at Hillhead Sports Club, tucked down a lane in a sleepy residential pocket of Hyndland overlooking playing fields. An interest in sports is by no means necessary to dine at a restaurant which sits faintly indifferent to its surrounds, serving family-friendly, reasonably priced well-made meals mainly to a neighbourhood crowd. There’s a gentle spin put on necessary staples of a Scottish-centric menu in starters such as Ramsay of Carluke’s haggis pakora and ham hough and pork croquette with crunchy black pudding soil. Daube of beef flakes easily on your fork in such a way as to live up to all of the eight hours of braising mentioned in its description, and wins an extra point for its lesser-spotted Scottish side-serving of rumbledethumps (mashed potato with spring onion and cabbage). Beer is probably the beverage of choice here, not because you’re in a sports club, but just because they’ve always got a few quality local guest brews on tap.
