Don’t be fooled by the Golf Tavern’s quaint village pub-like exterior, for beyond the bar lies a substantial restaurant serving quality food to rival any regular pub grub. It’s affectionately known by locals as the '19th Hole’ given its proximity to the adjacent 18-hole golf course, which has remained relatively unchanged since 1896. Homemade chicken curry, quiche, soups and pâtés are just some of its specialities while freshly prepared sandwiches and salad feature heavily on the menu during July and August. Daily specials are all par for the course and diners can expect hearty cooking with portions to match. Although the menu has been kept simple, there are still some surprises, such as the antipasto platter, combining a well-chosen selection of Italian meats and cheeses sourced from local suppliers. There is a separate children’s menu and most adult main meals are also available as half portions. The Tavern runs regular wine promotions to complement its menu and has an extensive wine list, from which diners can choose from a surprising number of both red and white wines by the glass.
- High point: Substantial portions make it great value for money
- Low point: Toilets could do with some upgrading
Known as the 19th Hole for years among locals, the former Golf Tavern formally took the name after a refurbishment in October 2014 and now offers a bar-bistro experience. A warm and inviting bar leads into a separate dining area with features such as golf club door handles offering a quirky take on the obvious sporting theme. Local producers feature prominently on the modern dining-pub menu, which offers the likes of pork belly as well as small bites and classy sandwiches. Special promotions appear on the 19th of every month, but on any other day just relax in the front bar with a St Andrews-made Eden Gin, no plus fours required.
