The highland cathedral city of Dunkeld attracts flocks of visitors, and the whitewashed, Georgian Atholl Arms Hotel fills the fine dining niche in its elegant Riverview Restaurant overlooking the wide, silvery Tay and Thomas Telford’s five-arched bridge. Cheery staff welcome well-heeled travellers into a be-tartaned snug for, perhaps, a pre-prandial Strathbaan beer, before a hearty repast of creamy Cullen skink, crispy-skinned yet pink pan-roast duck breast, wild mushrooms and Puy lentils flourished with colourful beetroot jus, broccoli and faddy carrot crisps, and finally, an artful, if blandly sweet, raspberry and white chocolate mousse mille feuille. Competent and attractive dishes overall – just what you’d expect for a posh night out, but, down budget, their Inn @ The Atholl bar/bistro serves Scottish pub grub from noon to 9pm every day, with half-price fish and chips on Thursdays 5pm to 8pm, and half-price burgers on Tuesdays 5pm to 8pm. The restaurant hosts five-course ‘Slow Food Dinners’ (£28) on the first Thursday of each month, and folk music sessions every Friday.
