Tiny Tyninghame Smithy is the cosy tearoom you’ve always hoped to stumble upon in the Scottish countryside. With its cheery jumble of tables and exposed brick walls, it feels like a crofter’s kitchen and has long been a popular pitstop for East Lothian’s walkers and cyclists who spill out into the sunny courtyard on dry days. Tea comes in teapots and coffee comes in cafetières – there are no lattes or cappuccinos here, but the friendly staff will warm a jug of milk for you and the pot encourages you to linger awhile rather than drain your cup and go. The lunch menu is unfussy – home-made soup and sandwiches – but most come for the fabulous home bakes: fluffy oven-fresh scones tempt alongside a cake display that might well include apple sponge with maple icing, perfectly sticky gingerbread or chocolate-topped mini banana cakes.
