Eating & Drinking Guide

Set on Cellardyke’s scenic harbour, you can almost see the Haven having once been the well-worn haunt of smugglers, sailors and fishermen. While it still has the reassuringly comfortable air of an old-fashioned public house, the décor and dining options suggest a more gentrified target market nowadays. The upstairs bar and lounge is snug but comfortable, and the menu offers a similarly warming take on old pub food favourites. The sautéed squid is served with a cheek-pinching chilli and lemon dressing and the beer battered haddock is slightly oily but otherwise fresh and flaky. Haddock and leek chowder, oven-steamed sea bass fillets with tomato salad and new potatoes and a hearty brunch of minute steak, Stornoway black pudding and smoky bacon all add to a menu that’s equally confident at sea or in the field.

With enough to divert you in Anstruther, some don’t make it as far as Cellardyke, the original home of the area’s fishing fleet. A winding walk through cobbled streets lined with pastel-coloured cottages ends when you get to Cellardyke's old stone harbour, the vista suddenly opening up and stretching over the Forth to the Isle of May. The Haven, overlooking the harbour, shares the view and is, as the name suggests, a fine spot to hole up in day or night. The upstairs interior seems wrapped in a cosy bubble all year round: there’s a small seated bar space, compact dining area looking onto the harbour and a fine beer garden worth exploring when weather allows. The menu mixes classics like fish and chips with rustic seafood chowder and particularly fine calamari; mackerel and lobster are landed in the harbour itself and in season make their way directly to the bar menu. It's a place that's worth the walk and hard to leave; you’ll feel like a local in no time at all.
