Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

The picturesque Pittenween location is merely an additional reason to seek out the Cocoa Tree Café and its onsite sister business the Pittenweem Chocolate Company. In any city in Scotland it would be a place worth going out of your way for, a very well-stocked artisan chocolatier with a relaxed café bearing a hint of a North African décor influence through the back. In the front room the glass cabinet of chocolates assembled from across Europe is prominent, and proprietor Sophie Latinis will be able to take you on a tour of her few-dozen strong selection of salt caramel, stem ginger and rose-infused treats, and many more including a range of signature single malt whisky chocolates she has made in Belgium. The café menu includes ciabattas, toasties and crêpes, although you’re advised to seek out the signature hot chocolates and a mixed bean soup made with cocoa, to which the addition of a few drops of tabasco is positively recommended.

  • High point: Chocolate treats prepared with obvious love and good taste

Through the back from the chocolate boutique, the café area is wrapped in a warming aroma of cinnamon bark that rests gently in a dish atop the stove. It’s the sort of unique touch and appreciation of aromatics that define the Pittenweem Chocolate Co. A petite but exquisitely prepared menu includes chunky bean and chorizo soup for bigger appetites, with crêpes and cakes for something lighter – and the chocolate brownie is as rich as might be expected from a chocolatier’s kitchen. Try the hot chocolate made with powder created in the nearby kitchen, a thick, gluggable potion that straws won’t make a dent on. The bohemian space includes the soothing wingspan of owner Sophie Latidis’ mannequin angel, keeping chocolate lovers safe in this cosy corner of the East Neuk.
