Steakhouse showcasing the best of Scottish with a varied and vegtastic seasonal menu.

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Macdonald Hotels has been championing Scottish produce since before it was cool. The UK-wide group has long had fantastic bacon, eggs, smoked haddie and Stornoway black pudding for breakfast, and now it is upping the ante for dinner, too. Across the UK, the dining rooms have been branded as the Scottish Steakhouse, specialising in a range of 21-day aged steaks – the rib of beef for two is a bit of a showstopper – combined with a seasonal menu sourced, as far as possible, from local providers. Hotels, inevitably catering for both business and pleasure, have the tough job of pleasing all comers – something the Macdonald Inchyra does with great confidence. Alongside the grill, the menu combines family favourites (St Mungo beer-battered fish and chips, multi-layered ice-cream sundae) with slightly more adventurous inclusions such as pumpkin and Parmesan tortellini with toasted pine nuts and sage leaves, or a chocolate brownie with a luscious dark cherry coulis. In the colder seasons, there is an emphasis on warming comfort foods – Scotch broth, colcannon mash, roasted roots, and plum and ginger crumble. Although the Stornoway black pudding Scotch egg starter is one crowd-pleaser that may well feature all year. The dining space is well thought out – couples can cosy up among calfskin cushions, larger family gatherings can spread out at long tables, while business brains can chat in no-nonsense leather bench booths. The bar, replete with Scottish booze (rum, vodka, and neighbouring Stirling Gin plus some Harviestouns), again ticks just about all the boxes. It’s a rewarding dining experience, helped by seeing a successful chain promoting the best of Scotland both here and further afield.

  • High point: Great Scottish menu, lovely staff
  • Low point: Pineapple soufflé was underwhelming
  • Notable dish: Stornoway black pudding Scotch egg
  • Average price: £15 (lunch); £25 (dinner)
