More than just your average cafe – Milk has inventive choices for breakfast, lunch and a sweet treat.
Milk at Morrison Street, in Edinburgh’s West End, is the original café among their other art space venues: the Fruitmarket Gallery, the Collective up on Calton Hill, Edinburgh Sculpture Workshop and Jupiter Artland. The minimalist space, mostly white amid splashes of green, is understated with contemporary stools, benches and tables. A seasonal sit-in and takeaway menu of homemade food offers breakfast, sandwiches, salads, hot food, and daily soup (always vegan), with plenty of gluten-free and vegan options. The daily hot special brings an abundance of goodness in a bowl; purple beetroot and carrots come stewed with Puy lentils, buckwheat and curly kale, served alongside generous hunks of Au Gourmand germagrain bread and green salad. The vegan chocolate truffle slice (a gluten-free staple) provides a smooth dark chocolate and coconut cream ganache, topped with sultanas, apricots and walnuts. Alongside stylish décor, good coffee and delicious food, welcoming staff dish up an all-round memorable café experience.

I always make a side dish of French beans with orange zest, toasted hazelnuts and nut oil. This is great because you can prepare it in advance and serve at room temperature. If I am serving roasted root vegetables I like to glaze them with raspberry…
