WoodWinters is the buying experience you dream of when staring blankly at ‘special offer’ bottles in the supermarket. The first shop opened in Bridge of Allan, followed a couple of years later by the Newington branch – unusually, and helpfully, both lay wine out according to style, rather than region. Shop manager Rob Gilmour has years of experience in the industry, and a free hand with the tasters to ensure you get exactly what you’re after. Talking of tasters, they have one of the best value tasting evenings around on the last Friday of the month (except November and December): six samples on a theme (think ‘Nice'n'Spicy’ – wines for takeaways, or ‘Forty-fied’ – sherry, port and madeira), usually accompanied by nibbles from local restaurants, all free. Room has been found in the little shop for an expanded whisky collection, including their own bottlings, and there’s an interesting, if necessarily restricted, range of beers from near and afar.
