This review is taken from the 2011 edition.
The Playwright has labelled itself 'uniquely intimate', which cannot be argued with. Offering some of the most inventive fine-dining food in Dundee, with a price list to match, The Playwright is ambitious in its endeavours. It succeeds, although the grazing menu is recommended if you are on a budget as are the favourably-priced lunch and pre-theatre set menus. More than 100 wines and champagnes are available by the bottle – the broadest selection of any eatery in Dundee – while an edited lineup of four reds and four whites are available in small, medium and large-measure glasses. Wine dinners are frequently held at the restaurant, providing patrons with the opportunity to learn more about specific winemakers and wine-growing regions while sampling food conceived especially to match the occasion. These events generally take place every 6-8 weeks and are advertised in advance on the premises.
The Playwright has quietly managed to retain an important place in Dundee's flourishing fine dining community. Well placed next to Dundee Rep on Tay Square, it has a loyal pre-theatre following. The decor sets the mood – the walls are lined with superb portraits of thespians – for some fine pre-dinner cocktails before moving through to the dining room for some sophisticated cooking and imaginative desserts.
On Tay Square in Dundee's cultural quarter, The Playwright is a contemporary restaurant offering fine dining from fresh, homemade produce. The menu uses creative flavour combinations to add modern touches to traditional British and European dishes, whilst the bar is a relaxed environment serving a vast array of wines and cocktails. Regular events are held at The Playwright, including wine and beer tasting evenings.
