Just a few blocks from Victoria Park, Tapa’s branch in Shawlands is a welcome stop-off point for parents with kids as well as those who appreciate good coffee and aren’t afraid of a tempting cake counter. With a rotating special, such as Bombay potato and lentil served with generous slabs of home-baked Tapa brown bread (the original Dennistoun spot is an organic bakery), and café staples done really well, such as a choice of homemade soup, this café is worth a visit even if you’re not in the neighbourhood. It can get busy at weekends due to its size but there’s always the option of ordering sandwiches or cake to go – open the container of lemon meringue pie, with it’s toasted snowy peaks and gooey centre, and make the ducks at the nearby pond jealous.

The muted earthy décor, shelves of brown bottled beverages, and steam rising from the counter and kitchen tell patrons everything they need to know about Tapa. With a focus on the local, the organic, and the ethical, customers can enjoy a guilt-free lunch. Located between Queens Park and the smart Strathbungo neighbourhood, Tapa offers simple, quality fare in a friendly and unpretentious setting. After breakfasts of porridge, toast, or bacon and eggs, the daytime menu is dominated by sandwiches, soups and salads, along with some hearty mains. The mountain of sausage and mash, for example, is topped with a pulpy onion gravy, but this classic comfort food is available in pork, vegetarian and vegan options. Sandwich fillings range from BLT to mediterranean vegetable. Thinly sliced steak is served between fluffy wedges of focaccia, gorged with zingy caramelised onion and rocket mayo. The accompanying potato salad is satisfyingly spicy. Complement with a glass of organic vegan wine, or gluten-free chocolate cake, and be sure to sample a coffee, from beans roasted on site.
