Since 2008 the St Andrews Farmhouse Cheese Company’s varieties of Anster cheese have been developing a wider following, but a pilgrimage to the place they’re made is a treat in its own right. This fresh and strikingly new café on the Stewart family farm – where cheesemaker Jane sources the milk from husband Robert’s herd of Holstein Friesian cows – has a great aspect to the south, looking down towards a panoramic view of Anstruther and the mouth of the Forth. Inside there’s a well-stocked deli corner and a viewing gallery where the public can watch the cheese being made, while the firm but delicately crumbly mild, mature and smoked versions are available to wrap up and take away or as a cheeseboard alongside oatcakes and chutney. Other standouts amidst the extensive menu include a rich ‘cheese savoury’ of sliced potatoes, bacon lardons and caramelised onions or a twice-baked cheese soufflé, both made with Anster. Cakes and sweet treats, meanwhile, are baked on the premises.
A thoroughly modern farmhouse cafe on the outskirts of Anstruther which provides light meals and lunches as an adjunct to selling its own produce. Anster cheddar can now be found in I.J. Mellis shops across Scotland and is increasing in popularity year by year. Here curious visitors can even see it being made via a viewing room to the rear of the dining area. Though the homely food may not take centre stage, it's served to a high standard: smoked salmon omelettes, fish cakes and homemade soups are packed with fresh flavours. For cheese gourmets, the smart choice is the cheese platter which showcases Scottish artisan cheeses from across the country accompanied by oatcakes made in house, looking out at the rolling fields of the surrounding farm..
