An old-school greengrocer's open since 1997, Tattie Shaws is a surviving independent among the rapidly changing face of local neighbourhood shops. There’s nothing to hide on quality and provenance here: bar the resolutely French strings of garlic and onions, a real effort is made to use local suppliers both for the fruit and veg packed tightly into the little store and the store-cupboard essentials lining any spare space. Bread, cakes and biscuits are bought in daily from Garvald Bakery, and for extra health points during your fruit and veg shop they stock organic herbal teas from fledgling artisan blender Miss IntegriTea. The long-running tram works brought any possibility of a widespread box scheme to a halt, but you can still call ahead for a box to be made up, which can then be collected from the shop or delivered city-wide for £15.
An old-school greengrocer's, Tattie Shaws is a surviving independent among the rapidly changing face of local neighbourhood shops. Filled to the brim with fresh fruit and vegetables (and often packed with customers too), you'll always get your questions on quality and provenance answered, while a good supply of store-cupboard essentials helps tick off a few more items from the shopping list.
