The definition of a quirky, artisanal producer with just six cheeses available through farmers' markets and delis. In the five years since Standhill started production after Jim and Annie Shanks decided on a post-retirement cheese career, their Minto Mellow Cheddar has become established. Winter snow led to transport issues and a glut of milk, which was promptly transformed into a fresh crowdie, now a best-seller. Also popular is the fabulously named Fatlips Castle Blue – named after a local landmark, not one of the coos.

It’s perfectly possible to fill your cheese board with Scottish artisan cheeses. The Larder has teamed up with Pierre Leger of respected cheese retailer and wholesaler Clarks Speciality Foods to assemble some of the country’s prime cuts.
