There are reasons aplenty to visit the café at Fenton Barns Farm Shop near North Berwick. The shop is an Aladdin’s cave of Scottish foodie delights, and a tasty symbiosis sees the cheeses, chocolate, smoked fish and ice-cream which pack the shelves migrating across to the café, either as regular menu items or as special requests for food to eat in or to take out for an impromptu picnic. Deli-style filled rolls match the bread to the filling, so a sesame roll is stoked with piccante prawn, smoked salmon and sweet chilli mayonnaise, while mushrooms ‘A Go-Go’ pile into a golden sesame and roasted pepper roll along with brie and roasted garlic mayo. The day’s special mains might include a butty of home-made cod fish fingers, quiche filled with meaty Portobello mushrooms, or a cockle-warming bowl of stovies with warm chutney on the side. To follow, the stripped pine sideboard is piled high with sweet goodies, with a taster plate of four tray bakes for the indecisive. To drink, there are interesting juices and smoothies as well as quality coffee.
- High point: The secret recipe stovies.
- Low point: Not licenced.
Fenton Barns Farm Shop brings the cream of East Lothian produce into a clean, airy space in which shopping is a joy. Fresh seasonal fruit and veg, sausages, cheeses and meats are all available, as well as frozen meals and sauces made on-site. To top it off, the café and deli counter offers tarts, pâté and game pies to take away, as well as sweet treats and cakes. Truly a farm shop with a difference.
