With its own gallery, farm walks and an evangelistic commitment to organic food, Whitmuir is a place where farming, culture and an enjoyment of the countryside mingle happily side by side. The expansive contemporary dining area is bright and spacious, filled with a hubbub from out-of-town foodies to parties of locals stopping in for coffee and cake. A huge, roaring wood-burning stove and play mat in the corner add hints of intimacy to an otherwise pleasantly open-plan restaurant. The proof of their home-grown privileged pigs is certainly in the eating. A pork and vegetable casserole is melt in the mouth tender. Although the kitchen pays obvious attention to meat from the farm, with plates of bangers and burgers, vegetarian dishes are by no means a poor-man’s option. A falafel burger with homemade bread more than matches the meat dishes for flavour. The sweet counter is also well stocked including gluten-free orange and polenta cake. Everything possible is organic. Prices are on the higher side for lunch but reflect value for money, and most of all food produced with a conscience. Staff also evidently enjoy the fun of the farm and visiting families are readily invited to meet the pigs.

A dynamic driving force in making organic farming relevant and accessible, Pete Ritchie and Heather Anderson's mixed farm north-west of Peebles now has one of Scotland's best-stocked organic farm shops with over 30 seasonal home-grown vegetables alongside herbs, fruit and farm-reared beef, pork, lamb, chicken and turkey. Altogether, Whitmuir's food hall sells over 250 lines of organic products, from cotton baby clothes to cosmetics. Alongside is a café-restaurant with a menu rich in farm-produced ingredients with an impressive range of daily specials; open daily, they also run an evening menu once a month. 'At Whitmuir we want to change the way people think about food, because it has become so divorced from the people who grow it, and how and where it is grown,' explains Anderson. And the couple are succeeding too: Whitmuir won the Best Organic Retailer at the UK Natural and Organic Awards 2011.
