The rustic wooden interior and homely smell of fresh baking at Kember and Jones makes it feel more like a farmhouse bakery than a busy Byres Road spot. The menu is considered and varied, with salads, such as the beautifully balanced goat’s cheese with sun-blushed tomatoes and pine nuts, and sandwiches, including the tangy and vibrant crab and cucumber, sitting alongside a selection of platters, hot specials and the recent addition of an all-day breakfast. Through years spent establishing an ethos of quality cooking, the café is now renowned for the high standard of its dishes, particularly its breads, many of which are on display and draw in hungry shoppers from the other side of the glass frontage, and cakes which come creatively baked and generously sliced, with the white chocolate, raspberry and pistachio proving a deliciously sweet highlight.

It’s no surprise that one often has to wait for a lunchtime table at Kember & Jones - its virtues are many. They roast their own coffee and they bake their own bread, and most of what is on the menu is available to buy from the deli, such is their faith in the quality of the produce. The platters are a lovely way to try as much as possible – a real celebration of taste and texture. The Spanish version has slices of Serrano and chorizo alongside almonds, figs, cheeses and quince jelly. You may have tried all the parts, but to get ‘best in class’ varieties beside each other on the same board makes a lunch fit for an Iberic prince. Sandwiches and salads are balanced and big on taste, while sweet things like brownies (properly rich and gooey) and Scandic-style parsnip and orange cake bring up the rear. It’s a buzzing, chatty favourite with many West Enders (and some local celebrities).
