At 40 barrels, the Williams Bros is one of Scotland’s largest independent breweries. One of the last remaining in Alloa, once known as ‘Scotland’s Beer Capital’ for having nine breweries, they are known for unusual flavours. This is rooted in the genesis of the company, which started with a home brew of Fraoch Heather Ale, developed by Bruce Williams from a Gaelic recipe thought to be 4000 years old. Their range has increased considerably from there to include 24 bottled beers, 16 in casks and seven kegged.
The brewery is developing a reputation for innovation that extends far beyond the mash tuns: in 2012 they opened Inn Deep in Glasgow, and in spring 2013 The Vintage opened in Edinburgh, a bar set up in collaboration with Williams Bros, who provide their core range. 2014 brought their biggest project yet: Drygate Brewing Co is a collaboration between Williams Bros and Tennent's, located right next to the latter's Wellpark Brewery in Glasgow, and includes an experimental brewery, bar and restaurant V @ Drygate (V for Vintage), events space, a beer hall and a brew-your-own studio kit for hands-on involvement.
