Opened in 2001 and initially inspired by Czech Republic tea rooms, Tchai-Ovna has taken on a laidback personality all of its own. Tea-lovers, locals and students alike flock to the cafe, which stocks over 100 varieties of tea, from as far as India and as near as Edinburgh. Filled with wooden benches and wicker chairs, the café is reminiscent of being in someone's living room and regularly hosts music and literature nights. Locally made cakes and wholesome vegetarian and vegan food are also on the menu. (At the time of writing Otago Lane was under threat from property developers.)
