John Brash founded his high street butchers in 1976 with an unusual selling point: with family hailing from Port Elizabeth in South Africa, he not only makes sausages, haggis and puddings on-site, but also biltong, borewors and droewors. His proximity to Murrayfield Stadium makes these in huge demand when certain teams are playing. He sources free-range chicken from Fife, beef from Linlithgow and pork from East Linton, but can also get you kudu, springbok and crocodile tail. He also stocks a range of South African larder goods, from spices to sweets, which can be bought from his website or in store.

Included in our Larder listings – order print copies of our national (pub. 2010) and regional guides.
