The New Leaf Co-op
The most fitting of takeovers for an organic wholefood store occurred in October 2012, when previous owners Linda and Derek's retirement saw the shop come under the management of a five-person workers' cooperative. Partly crowd-funded, they see this shop as a true community hub – locals helped with the get-in, and they made the signage and shelving themselves. Keeping the same ethos of organic, ecological, sustainable foods, 20-somethings Dee, Karen, Neus, Sophie and Will have also expanded the premises, and are committed to keeping it as affordable as possible. Organic fruit and veg comes from Phantassie in East Linton, there's a reliably wide range of free-from, vegan and veggie foods, and racks of colourful self-service pulses, dried fruits and cereals. Their pièce de résistance is a peanut grinder – watching fresh nutty butter curl into a jar has to be one of the most satisfying shopping experiences possible.
