The Cyrenians Farm
A social enterprise located half and hour's drive from central Edinburgh, the Cyrenians Farm produces fruit and vegetables, and eggs from free range chickens. It has traditionally and predominantly been farmed on organic principles, but voraciously successful weeds have caused them to pull back from pursuing organic certification. However, the same growing regime as before is still used in the polytunnels, apple and (for 2014) pear orchard, soft fruit fields and for the chickens. As well as producing local food, the farm provides support and training to vulnerable young people, many with backgrounds of homelessness. Farm-made produce includes jams and chutneys, all (except marmalade) made using their fruit. You can buy their strawberries, tomatoes, eggs and salads and a host of other seasonal fruit and veg from Balerno farmers' market on the second Saturday of every month. They also offer deliveries to offices in central Edinburgh on Thursdays, and supply Real Foods in Broughton Street and Earthy in Ratcliffe Terrace.
