Brian Kaye has farmed Tarrylaw for over 25 years. A mixed 3,750-acre farm, it forms part of the 5,000-acre Culfargie Estates just north of Perth. Organically grown potatoes, carrots, wheat, beans, oats, parsnips and leeks are grown for supermarkets including Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury's. Oats are grown conventionally on contract to Quaker Oats, and wheat is grown for distilleries. Farm-grown oil seed rape supplements the feed of the organically reared ewe flock and herd of suckler cows - this beef is destined for Dovecote Park, who supply Waitrose. Some lambs are sold locally, with the rest heading to major multiples. Kaye sees environmental management as inseparable from farming: conservation activities at Tarrylaw Farm include extensive tree and hedgerow planting, field margins, pond creation, wildlife corridors, livestock shelter belts and beetle banks.
