Beautifully traditional, busy bar with quieter tables out back serving modern pub food at decent prices

Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Sadly, La Petite Mort next door is no more, but its spirit lives on in Bennets and Tables at Bennets. They shared a kitchen anyway, and now they share a menu and a space, but having been around since 1906, Bennets isn’t going anywhere. You come for its classic pub vibes – dark wood panels, mirrors, green stained glass and steamed-up windows – then when you get peckish you can crack on with some food, or drift through to Tables for a, well, table. Or if you’re just plain hungry you may well start there. While still under development, the new menu boasts the ubiquitous dirty and halloumi fries, burgers, katsu chicken sandwich, falafel and chimichurri (don’t worry, there’s still excellent fish and chips) with plenty of vegan options: it’s sure to satisfy everyone. There are Scottish beers on tap, lots of whisky and gins and a buzzy, mixed crowd of theatre-goers, regulars, tourists and students. Worth the stop.
