Housed in an eighteenth-century butcher’s shop which once served the ancient burgh by horse and cart this classy addition to Linlithgow’s High Street is both quirky and welcoming. A sympathetic refit has boosted the innate charm of the room, showcasing original fittings, stained glass, cranberry walls, retro bric-a-brac and the original butcher’s rail. Although petite and cosy, the atmosphere can seesaw from chatty to lively throughout the day, while regular events like jazz nights and tastings keep a steady stream of appreciative buffs entertained. Being just two train stops from central Edinburgh, it’s also the perfect bolthole for those who want to swap big city bustle for small town charm. As for the wine selection, old and new world varieties are represented, including a perky viognier via La Poderosa which launches with ripe oranges, eventually revealing apricots and passion fruit. From the reds, a nicely priced French merlot from La Doutelle has dark plums, berries and a deep earthiness which warms the ribs. Sparklers like Vilarnau cava are also popular, and make a decadent adjunct to freshly prepared platters featuring Mellis cheeses and Dolly pies.
