Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Rarely does a bar make as assured a debut as the Gate’s. It’s no surprise, with Andy Gemmell of the Drinks Cabinet at the helm, and a serious team of pros backing him up. But still — it’s great for Glasgow as a whole and the Gallowgate in particular. Look for the sexy yellow lightning bolt opposite the Barras, and step into a snug space of stone and wood, and more than 150 malts. The Gate is slick, but also welcoming – big smiles, warmth all round, and colour coded pricing for those whiskies — indicative of their abiding principle that nothing about drinking here should be intimidating. The Tennent’s tap sits alongside a draft cocktail tap (yep) and the food menu consists of toasties on (marvellously, and correctly) thick white sandwich bread. Cocktails are classic, and classy; made with precision and panache. So far they’ve had takeover events from ultra-cool London bar Blackrock and Edinburgh’s Mexican restaurant El Cartel. And then there’s a certain Mr Beckham, who chose to relaunch his Haig Club whisky here. They also do alcohol-free Mondays, which is truly daring in the drinking culture of Glasgow. A genuinely brilliant bar.
