Beautiful conversion of the old Victoria Bar, with a focus on European food and a warm welcome.

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).
Gentrification and Europe are both rather … challenging in the current political climate, so thank goodness for Damm27, a Causewayside bar that rather prettily flies the flag for both. It would be downright churlish to mourn the loss of another traditional boozer (and let’s face it, the Victoria Bar wasn’t exactly the bonniest) when the update is this good – dark green tiles, leather booths and exposed brick work feel both contemporary and luxe. The food is unashamedly European: coq au vin, mussels and charcuterie are all more compelling than the list of five burgers, while small plates feature squid tempura, cauliflower kale croquettes, and bone marrow mac and cheese to make nibbling interesting. There’s a French twist on afternoon tea too – le goûter sees the traditional post-school snack upgraded to include quiche, croissants and macarons. Service is immaculate, personable without being intrusive, and there’s a real sense that the staff are working hard to get things right. But – cheeringly – this is a bar first and foremost. The cocktail list positively encourages daytime drinking, beers are approachable and familiar, and the pub quiz – that most British of all bar entertainment – is packed out every week.
