The 2018/19 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

It must be both exciting and nerve-wracking to read reviews of your new pizza place in Italian. This is what happened when Baked Pizza al Taglio (‘pizza by the slice’) opened opposite the Tennent’s brewery. A quick Google translate revealed that this traditional Roman-style street snack was going down very well among Italian residents keen for a slice of home. And no wonder – head pizzaiolo, Daryl Leach, honed his dough-making skills at Italy’s renowned Sorbillo pizzeria, and the crisp-yet-fluffy results (after a 72-hour prep, prove and bake) are very impressive. Toppings include meticulously sourced Italian produce such as a gorgonzola piccante and ’nduja along with local seasonal veg. Among the dozens of tantalising combinations may be: potato and rosemary; pear, gorgonzola, radicchio, balsamic glaze and crushed walnut; sausage, broccoli and orange zest; or ’nduja, mushrooms, ricotta and parsley – and there is always more than a decent nod to veggies and vegans. As the slice is partially baked then reheated it doesn’t have the sizzle and char of a wood-fired Neopolitan, but it is terrific to see a dedicated team educating Glasgow on this regional variation with such creative flair.

BAKED pizza al taglio – pizzeria specialising in pizza al taglio alla Romana (Roman sheet pan pizza).

The pizza dough is super light and crispy. The pizza is baked as a large rectangular pie then cut to order and sold by the slice. Toppings include cured meats and cheeses imported direct from Italy alongside fresh seasonal fruits and vegetables. The pizza is sold from a display case which is split into 3 sections; Vegan, Vegetarian and Meats/Fish. There are always multiple varieties available to choose from in each section. Also on the menu are freshly made Supplì and Arancini which are hand made and served in the classic Roman style. As for beverages there are a large range of Italian soft drinks as well as espresso based coffee options.

The restaurant has a relaxed and comfortable ambience where you can sit in or take away at your leisure, even bring your own bottle (BYOB) without corkage charges. Dog friendly, high chairs and baby change facilities also.
