Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2018 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £7.95 (+p&p).

Like a warm hug on a cold day, Mums is there to make everything all right again. This friendly spot serves up big portions of home-cooked comfort food in a relaxed and fuss-free retro setting. Sausage, mash and gravy take centre stage, flanked by classics such as shepherd’s pie, steak and ale stew and fish and chips. There are burgers too and a wide selection of vegetarian options from macaroni cheese and veggie haggis to pumpkin pie and mushroom Wellington. But it’s the bangers that are the real stars here. A specials board lists half a dozen varieties including lamb and mint, pork and chives or spinach, leek and cheese, and the mash comes with everything from chipotle and cheese to black pudding and apple. The portions are huge but make sure you leave some room for dessert – a homely selection of crumbles, tarts and treacle puddings. Mums draws a mixed crowd from students and office workers to grandparents taking the grandkids out for a treat. Everything also comes in dairy or gluten-free options. For food that’s designed to cheer you up, Mums the word.
