Eating & Drinking Guide

The 2019/20 edition of The List's Eating & Drinking Guide is out now – only £5.95 (+p&p).

Despite its location in deepest student heartland of Newington, a broad cross-section of Edinburgh’s residents are Greenmantle regulars. Some come for the live screenings of sporting events, others come for the near-mythical Monday night pub quiz (which is often fully booked in advance). But almost everyone comes for the burgers, which are named after local spots and the main fixture on the menu. The Causey sees the surprising addition of goat’s cheese to bacon and onion rings, which introduces a complex depth of flavour to the otherwise recognizable classic. Veggie and vegan patties are available with any of the burger combinations, so no-one misses out. The vegan option is a beautifully textured mix of beetroot, quinoa and red pepper which works particularly well with healthy helpings of guacamole and salsa in The Pleasance.

18 Nov 2011

A cheap and cheerful crawl from Marchmont to Grassmarket

I have a confession to make. I’ve never really been much of a bar crawl sort of gal. The idea of systematic drinking (vb. to lash, I suppose) with a bunch of overgrown rugby boys, with their girlfriend’s underwear on as outer wear, has never really…
