A location right beside an old stone harbour is about as ideal as you could ask for in a North East seafood restaurant. The catch from the creel boats based here often makes its way up to the restaurant, set in a sixteenth-century building.
Local shellfish is a speciality at the Tolbooth and langoustines, crab and lobster regularly feature on the fine dining à la carte menu - in the case of lobster, they aim to have it on every day it's in season, and will do their best to get it for you all year round if requested beforehand. This is balanced with local pork, venison and beef dishes and a seasonal vegetarian option: think thyme mille feuille with cep mushrooms, sun-blushed tomatoes and Thai grass, or hand-dived West Coast scallops with bacon crisp, pea purée, sautéed potato cubes and a bacon foam. The low ceiling, roughcast walls and small windows creates an intimate dining atmosphere that’s appreciated by couples and small groups with something special to celebrate. Note that access to the Tolbooth is via a steep flight of stairs and wheelchair access is not available.
